PAPER ARCHITECTURE

The PAPER ARCHITECTURE movement started in Russia in 1980s in opposition to severe stagnation in Soviet life and architecture at that time. A small group of Russian students at Moscow Architectural Institute and recent graduates managed to find an escape from the professional crisis by participating in international competitions. In all, more than fifty awards were given to their projects. By 1985 the movement won enough competitions to get recognition in Russia and abroad. First 'Paper Architecture' exhibition was assembled in 1984 in Moscow: the first significant publication appeared in 1985.

The term 'paper architecture' was used in the 1980s by most architects in order to distinguish this new wave from the 'official Soviet architecture'. The name Gorbachev was unknown yet, contacts with West were limited, and definition 'paper architect' sounded like 'theoretical architect'. It did not sound like total rejection of the existing architectural practice, or , even worse, the Soviet regime itself. For the projects demonstrated significant departure from the 'approved' style. Moreover, the stylistic, visual, and philosophical approach to seemingly formal architectural program (Glass Tower, for example), allowed the authors to create complex conceptual statements on a single sheet of paper.

The watercolors, ink drawings, etchings, serigrapgs, shown in this collection are, on the one hand, works of art in their own right, and, on the other hand, accumulations of design energies aiming to expand future.
